Each indicator has a default value, or national benchmark, which is shown to the left of each slider bar. When you select an indicator, each valid ZCTA on the map (that has population data) becomes filled in if it is above (or in some cases, below) the national benchmark. Once you move the slider you will see ZCTAs become filled or un-filled as the threshold changes.
